Project description

Thanks to a Web development based on Java and free software technologies, the new budgetary management system of the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC), e-SICUS, has enabled the functional and technical improvement of the old management system based on Access by simplifying daily tasks, obtaining and integrating information with other systems.

Approach

• Replacement of the old application based on Access.

• Java-based web development.

• Architecture divided in layers using free technologies:

  • Tapestry-based user interface.

  • Business logics using Spring Framework.

  • Hibernate-based object persistence.

• Drawing up of reports with iReport (Jasper Reports).
  

• Mixed work team USC-Igalia from different physical locations.

Results

Functional and distributed budgetary management system:

• Simple layout: accessible via browser.

• Better reflection of the processes: implication of all the participating actors.

• Integration with other systems: open architecture.

• Centralized information management: reports using a single data source.

• Collaboration possibilities: other universities could join the project in the future thanks to its free-technology-based philosophy.
