Modest

Modest is a lean and mean e-mail client optimized for hardware with small resources.

Modest is a fully-featured e-mail user agent that makes use of the tinymail framework. Although Modest's main target are devices with low resources, it could be used as desktop e-mail client as well. This is possible because Modest was designed on top both the Maemo platform and the GNOME Mobile framework.

Modest supports among others POP3, IMAP4, Maildir and SMTP mail servers with SSL/TLS authentication. Being specially designed for mobile computing, Modest was designed with the idea that Internet connectivity is not always available. That's why online/offline work modes are fully supported. Modest saves bandwith (and thus money in GPRS connections) by only downloading the minimum information by default. It also fully support IMAP IDLE, a.k.a push email, which allows the user to be notified by the server about new emails without asking for them. Mobile computing implies that a mobile device could be connected to different networks the same day. Modest is capable to recognize and use the specific SMTP servers of those networks to send mail, allowing for example, to use the company SMTP server at work, and the ISP SMTP server at home with zero configuration.

Modest includes other cool features that make it specially useful for common users. First of all, Modest provides a fully featured rich text editor. The second one is that Modest UI is specially designed to be very finger-friendly, altough other complex UI interactions like drag&drop or stylus painting are possible as well. And finally, Modest comes with what is called Easy Setup, just select a country and a ISP, provide an user name and a password and Modest will automatically configure the account.

The Postman always rings twice

Another One Bites the Dust
