The Debian package management tools are powerful enough to manage the whole system, but the Hildon Application Manager does not offer full power to the user.

Instead, Hildon Application Manager is intended to be fully compatible with existing and future interfaces to the package management tools. For example, it should be possible to freely alternate between apt-get, synaptic and Hildon Application Manager and without breaking anything. Thus, if the user needs more power, the Debian package management tools can be directly used, as well as one of the more powerful interfaces.

Igalia's involvement in HAM started back in 2007 with the development of new features for the Maemo 3 platform (AKA "Chinook"), and continued throughout the Maemo 4 and 5 platforms (AKA "Diablo" and "Fremantle", respectively), both with the development of new features as well as maintenance tasks. Hildon Application Manager is one of the key pieces of software for Maemo devices (like the last Nokia N900), enabling users to enjoy full and seamless system updates, as well as providing a really easy to use system to manage the installation and uninstallation of extra applications on the mentioned platforms.
